Doha, AFP — Qatar warned on Tuesday of "catastrophic" consequences for the region from any US-Iranian military escalation, as Washington threatens military intervention amid the crackdown on protest movements. Majed Al-Ansari, a spokesperson for Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said at a press conference regarding mutual military threats between Tehran and Washington: "We know that any escalation... will have catastrophic consequences, in the region and beyond, so we want to avoid that as much as possible." These remarks by Ansari came after the White House confirmed that President Donald Trump is keeping the option of launching air strikes on Iran on the table in response to a campaign to suppress anti-government protests, while keeping a diplomatic channel with Tehran open.
