The Amir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, signed an edict on Tuesday inviting all Qataris to participate in the elections for the self-appointed parliament of the country. The edict states that the first elections for the parliament will take place in October 2021.

The first elections for the Qatari parliament have been discussed in recent years as part of a broader reform process conducted by the state. This gives citizens the opportunity to participate in making decisions that affect their future.

"Holding the first elections for the parliament is an important step in our democratic journey. It reflects our commitment to strengthening the role of citizens in making decisions and shaping the future of the country," noted the Amir of Qatar.

The elections will fill 30 seats in the future parliament, while 15 seats will be allocated by royal decree. The Qatari constitution was amended in 2019, providing the opportunity for the establishment of a parliament that has legislative powers.
